U10's Unbeaten Run comes to and End!!

Writer: Jonathan PowellJonathan Powell

The U10s can count themselves a little unfortunate in seeing their hugely impressive 9 match unbeaten run come to an end. Against a much improved Youngstars, that tantalising 10th match proved just out of reach.

There was a delayed start to the match as Youngstar's Goalkeeper was stuck in traffic, driving himself to the game. Barkingside were on the front foot from the outset. Kayson was having a great deal of joy down the inside channel, and there were one or two half chances that came his way. However, very much against the run of play, Youngstar's took the lead, albeit under controversial circumstances. Lewis looked to have gathered the ball successfully, only for Youngstar's diminutive striker to prod it from his grasp. All eyes went to the ref and initially it looked like the goal wouldn't stand - it was hard to tell to be honest, as his hands remained firmly in pocket. The goal stood, and Barkingside had to gather themselves.

Shortly afterwards, Barkingside were once again on the wrong side of an interesting interpretation of the law. Kayson's free kick from distance found the net, but the referee called him back - it seemed the Youngstar's goalkeeper either did or didn't have some gloves on. Again, it was difficult to say for sure what had been given. A well worked corner routine between Alfie, Kayson and Josh almost saw Barkingside level, but frustratingly, the ball just wouldn't find the net.

George and Savanyah were once again shoring things up well at the back and Ian also impressed as he covered for George late in the half.

The second half was one-way traffic again. Youngstar's were playing on the break and leaving big gaps at the back. On one Barkingside breakaway, Ben fed in Kayson but his magnificent strike was superbly saved by the Youngstar's keeper. In the next surge down the right flank, Kayson put in a super cross, which Josh met, sliding in at the back post. Unfortunately, it struck the post and another chance was gone. Lucas mesmerised the Youngstar's back four and cleverly fashioned another chance - but sadly, this one also went begging. There was still time for Kayson to drill another long shot in, but once again, Youngstar's keeper was equal to it.

The game finished, and Youngstar's celebrated a famous victory. Barkingside could only reflect on what could have been. The 10s demonstrated terrific resolve and determination in the second half and came so close to a deserved equaliser. However, they will have learnt a great deal from the experience. Well played everyone. Let's get on another run in January.

Happy Christmas to all.
